Marahlago Larimar

History

Larimar was forged from the volcanic forces that shaped the Caribbean.  There, it remained undiscovered until small bits of stone tumbled down a river to the sea, being polished along the way.  In 1974, a local artisan rediscovered the stone and named it for his daughter (Larissa) and the Spanish word for the sea (mar).

Rarity

The rarity of Larimar is legendary.  It can only be found on a single square kilometer that is protected by a dense rainforest in the Dominican Republic.  Unpaved roads and unexpected weather make acquiring the precious gem even more difficult.  Those who own Larimar know it is an investment that will only increase in value over time.

Selection Guide

The best quality Larimar is a combination of several factors.  Three important factors are color, pattern and inclusions.  The best pieces blend a pleasing blue color with an interesting pattern.  However, since the pattern is white, it can lighten the overall appearance of the stone.  While inclusions can be very interesting, they are usually avoided in the higher grades of stone.
